F-Secure Warn Users about ZeuS Variant Gameover Entering Monster.com

F-Secure, the giant of digital data security, is warning users against Gameover, which is a notorious variant of Trojan ZeuS. The variant is creating problems in a popular job portal website- Monster.com. According to F-Secure security analyst, the attack actually compromises user accounts in two steps, when they visit the job portal.

The Trojan variant Gameover is planted in the host’s computer by typical method of tempting users, which includes a spam, malware, bot installer, or an exploit toolkit. When this Trojan is implanted into the system, the malware then stores credentials such as username and password entered in online forms.
In its second phase, the users are asked to fill a fake online security verification form. This form directs user to choose and reply 3 security questions out of 18 questions in total, which then reveals the rest of user credentials to the hackers. This then gives full control of the users’ account to hackers.

According to F-Secure, the purpose of this attack is still not known, although hacking into the HR departments’ accounts via Monster could possibly be the reason. The number of victims of the attack is also not clear.

Before attacking on Monster.com, the Gameover ZeuS was attacking another job portal website CareerBuilder.com, since a long time. Also in the first half of February 2014, a fresh variant of Gameover got dispersed as .enc file (encrypted document). Later in the same month, another variant of Gameover was spotted which safeguard its process via kernel rootkit, therefore making it very hard to remove the malware.
So F-Secure are advising users are to look out for unusual things on the login page and incorporate a two factor validation. Besides these, installing a strong antivirus and internet security software, those provided by F-Secure, is recommended.

F-Secure security software is one of the best security software available out there. All of their products are pretty good at doing their job well and making your data safe and secure. However, they are simply products and may create problems or issues in the future.
