Symantec Reports Increase in Hit-and-Run Attacks Using .club Domain

The security company, Symantec reported that it recently found a significant increase in the hit-and-run spam attacks from .club gTLD domains in the past few days. According to the company the major increase in the hit-and-run spam attacks (also referred as ‘snowshoe’ attacks, sometimes) was seen on 11th and 12th June 2014.



The company says “Earlier this year the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) released a number of generic top-level domains (gTLD), with .club among them. Spammers have taken to abusing gTLDs, and specifically, the .club gTLD to perform hit-and-run spam attacks.”
In order to avoid detection, the Hit-and-Run spam attacks quickly switch-cycle through domains and IP addresses that are having unknown/not-so-good reputations. In the reported attacks, the attackers were using domain with the .club gTLD.

Though Symantec also said that it had contacted the administrators of the infected .club gTLD and assured that, it will work together with them to shut down spam domains in the .club zone.
