ESET Warns Users against a Rising Facebook Hoax

The leading digital data security company, ESET is warning users against a recent Facebook hoax that relates to the lost Malaysian Air Flight MH370; which went missing four months ago. According to an ESET blog post written by Rob Waugh, a security blogger, “a link showing the nose of an airliner jutting above the waves, with the headline, ‘Malaysian Air Flight MH370 found by sailor’ has been circulating on Facebook this week,”

The message in the link reads, “Malaysian Air Flight MH370 Found By Sailor Moments Ago: Mystery Solved – Sailor Awarded $5 Million on spot,”
The hoax falsifies to show a video on the breaking news. But in reality, there is no video and the entire story is fake. In fact clicking on the link in the Facebook hoax lands you to multiple survey websites, which are basically to help the link creator to earn money “via affiliate marketing schemes. Some of the surveys attached to this particular scam ask for a mobile phone number – anyone who provides this information is immediately signed up for costly SMS services,” Waugh writes.

The bottom-line is that there are multiple hoax scams running on the internet. The attackers use different tactics to fool users and then make money. Using the latest-trending news story in their scams is one of the various effective ways, which the attackers use.

Simply staying updated and using reliable internet security software like the latest ESET Internet Security software and ESET firewall can help to stay protected. Curesec, a German Security company, found these two separate Android bugs. According to Curesec, these two found bugs can be exploited by malicious codes, to bypass the privileged permissions, specifically automatic call-forwarding or phone call to premium rate numbers.
“Android normally has to grant permission so that your applications can conduct actions,”
“If your installed application does not own the right to do a phone call, the Android OS should throw a permission denied,” the researchers write.
“However this bug is circumventing the situation and allows any malicious app to do a phone call, send [codes to the network] or hangup an ongoing call.”
According to ESET’s Threat Trend Report, there is “an escalating increase in serious threats targeting Android phones and tablets – ESET detections of such malware increased more than 60% between 2012 and 2013. This trend is predicted to continue in 2014.”

So it is very necessary for the Android users that they protect themselves using preventing and protective measures, like installing reliable Android security solutions and also keeping away from malicious apps and apps’ sources. Plus staying in contact with tech support experts like Techcillin is also helpful, as effective support, like PC support, antivirus support, Avira technical support, virus removal support etc., can be availed at any time.

ESET Uncovered A Backdoor Trojan That Hijacked 2500 Plus UNIX Servers

After a recent survey, ESET, the global leader in proactive digital security protection, has announced that its security research team, in collaboration with CERT-Bund, has uncovered a wildly spread malware involving a backdoor Trojan, which has managed to hijack and seize control of over 2500 UNIX servers worldwide. They named the Trojan "Windigo".

Pierre-Marc Bureau, Security program manager of ESET said ”Windigo has been gathering strength, largely unnoticed by the security community, for more than two and half years and has over 10000 servers under its control. This number is significant if you consider each of these systems have access to significant bandwidth, storage, computing power and memory.”

The attack Windigo, actually hijacks servers and then infect the computers that visit them and steals information from their system. The infected servers are then used for redirecting thousands of web visitors to malicious content on a daily basis.

ESET researchers are warning and advising webmasters and system administrators to check their system because, more than 60 percent of websites in the world are running on Linux Servers. So there are chances that they get infected. According to reports, servers located across the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and France are amongst the infected ones. The published report explains the team’s finding on investigation and malware analysis. The report also offered necessary steps to determine: if the systems are affected by the malware, and instruct to remove the malicious code.

Besides these major guides, it also advises users to keep their ESET antivirus and firewall updated. And if in case you are having any difficulties in updating the ESET Antivirus or any other ESET security product, contact ESET Support is the best option.
