According to an ESET blog post written by Rob Waugh, a security blogger, “a link showing the nose of an airliner jutting above the waves, with the headline, ‘Malaysian Air Flight MH370 found by sailor’ has been circulating on Facebook this week,”
The message in the link reads, “Malaysian Air Flight MH370 Found By Sailor Moments Ago: Mystery Solved – Sailor Awarded $5 Million on spot,”
The hoax falsifies to show a video on the breaking news. But in reality, there is no video and the entire story is fake. In fact clicking on the link in the Facebook hoax lands you to multiple survey websites, which are basically to help the link creator to earn money “via affiliate marketing schemes. Some of the surveys attached to this particular scam ask for a mobile phone number – anyone who provides this information is immediately signed up for costly SMS services,” Waugh writes.
